Health Canada Consultation on Safety Code 6
Bad Science Watch submitted a brief to Health Canada today summarizing the scientific evidence on Idiopathic Environmental Intolerance attributed to Electromagnetic Fields (IEI-EMF), known colloquially as Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity or EHS. The document summarizes the findings of both our position paper on IEI-EMF released in 2012 and the presentation by one of our science advisers, Dr. Rob Tarzwell, to the Royal Society of Canada’s Expert Panel on Safety Code 6.
While there is strong evidence that IEI-EMF is a somatoform disorder that does cause real and sometimes debilitating symptoms, there is no credible evidence that it is caused by exposure to electromagnetic fields. Despite this, small but highly vocal fringe groups like C4ST, funded by wealthy CEO Frank Clegg, are continuing to push the un-credible idea that cell phones and (even less plausibly) WiFi hotspots are making people sick. At the same time the media all but ignores the undeniable evidence and the expert scientific consensus that there is no such link, and now even neglects the most basic reporting of opposition and mainstream science in their coverage of this issue.
Bad Science Watch remains one of the only organizations working directly against this spreading of misinformation and conspiratorial ideology. With the evidence overwhelmingly against them, fringe groups like C4ST commonly resort to the blunt tools of fear, uncertainty, and doubt. Against those tactics, Bad Science Watch is continuously working to raise the level of informed public discussion of the issue, providing critical, independent analysis to our decision makers and the media, and making the science accessible and understandable to the public.
