Bad Science Watch Presses Parliament to Include Natural Health Products as « Vanessa’s Law » Goes to Committee
TORONTO, ONTARIO–(Marketwired – June 2, 2014) – While Bad Science Watch applauds Parliament for passing second reading of Bill C-17, the Protecting Canadians from Unsafe Drugs Act (Vanessa’s Law), the consumer protection organization is unhappy the bill still dangerously exempts Natural Health Products (NHPs).
« Canadians deserve robust safety and enforcement regulations for all health care products, » said Jamie Williams, executive director of Bad Science Watch. « NHPs are already under-regulated and this law, if passed unmodified, will further entrench the lack of consideration for the health and safety of NHP users. »
Bad Science Watch will continue to fight to have the bill changed as it works itself through committee and calls on committee members from all parties to amend the Act to apply equally to every health care product approved for use in Canada.
« If the bill comes into law without this change, the minister would have the power to recall a tainted drug, but not an herbal preparation contaminated with heavy metals, » Williams said.
Bad Science Watch also believes Bill C-17 should be amended to require pharmaceutical companies to disclose all clinical trial data for approved drugs, medical devices, non-prescription treatments and NHPs.
Williams is also encouraging all Canadians to express their concerns by emailing members of the Standing Committee on Health and/or through social media by visiting www.badsciencewatch.ca.
